These days most of us do a lot of shopping online, but while it may seem simple and easier than heading to the store, a new report reveals that it takes folks a long time to finally pull the trigger on a purchase.

A new poll finds:

  • The typical online purchase involves seven steps, and three hours and five minutes.
  • The seven steps include:
    • Deciding on a need for something, which takes 35 minutes.
    • Searching for the product you want including social media sites, which takes 33 minutes.
    • Reading online reviews and going through recommendations, another 29 minutes.
    • Comparing product to other similar products for price and quality, which takes 31 minutes.
    • Sharing links with friends and family, 14 more minutes.
    • Putting something into your online or real-life basket, another 19 minutes.
    • Actually making the purchase, 24 minutes.
  • When it comes to actually choosing an item, the average shopper won’t buy anything with less than 3-point-4 stars out of five.
  • 10% would actually pass on an item if there were a single one-star rating, even if it had 99 other five-star ratings.
  • 62% of shoppers say they would never buy an item without thoroughly researching it first.
  • 14% though say they are impulse buyers, who shop first and worry about the consequences later.
  • Although 30% of people say they are more likely to make an impulse buy in a real store rather than online (23%)
