What you eat can have a big impact on your mood and lots of us turn to comfort foods, like pasta or ice cream, when we want a pick-me-up. But it turns out, some of the stuff we think of as comfort foods may not actually make us feel good after we eat it. New research into the eating habits of adults in the U.K. reveals which foods and beverages have the most positive and negative impact on their emotions. They’ve also determined the food that’s most likely to put you in a bad mood and it may have you rethinking that Dunkin’ run.
A survey of 2-thousand people from natural food brand Kallo and conducted by OnePoll asked about the foods and drinks that put a smile on their face and which ones make their mood sink. And topping the list for bad mood foods are several sugary and highly processed items – doughnuts comes in first, followed by alcohol, soft drinks and energy drinks. Simple carbs and saturated fats can cause inflammation, sluggishness, indigestion and other negative physical side effects and may be the source of the bad mood people feel after consuming them.
And on the flip side, the poll also reveals the foods people go for to boost their mood. Coffee comes in number one, followed by dark chocolate, then grapes and berries. The foods on the good mood list tend to be more natural and less processed, and that may be why people feel better after eating them.
